Song Song Hui, the Manageress of the Pyongyang Optician’s, has earned the love and respect of people, all thanks to her connection with glasses that runs in the family.

This unique relationship with eyewear began with her father, Song Tae Gwan, a businessman with a patriotic heart. In the post-liberation era, during a vigorous anti-illiteracy campaign, her father heeded the call of the great leader Kim Il Sung to contribute to the new country. Song Tae Gwan, being the first to produce pencils in the country, donated a significant portion of his assets for the nation’s development.

Driven by the same spirit, he ventured into producing essential items like oil paper for seedplot and even established a glass factory when the demand arose. In the 1980s, he achieved the formidable task of producing transparent tempered glass for the Tower of the Juche Idea, showcasing his commitment to national progress.

Song Song Hui fondly recalls her father’s patriotic mindset, always prioritizing the country over personal gain. Inspired by his example, she transitioned from being a doctor to an expert in glasses, aligning with her father’s wishes. She tirelessly worked to create high-quality glasses, equipped her optician’s with modern facilities, and provided diverse services.

Not confined to her shop, Song Song Hui visited various industrial sites and construction locations across the country, conducting eye tests even in the offices of scientists and the studies of writers. Alongside her services, she sang songs to uplift and encourage working people, extending special care to war veterans, honored disabled soldiers, and contributing to major construction projects.

For her dedicated efforts, she received a doctorate, earned the title of Meritorious Person of Socialist Patriotism, and received official commendations. Now over 70 years old, Manageress Song Song Hui continues to dedicate herself to the country’s work, embodying the adage, “Like father, like daughter,” earning affectionate praise from those who observe her unwavering commitment.
