As the cold winter gradually yields to the warm embrace of spring, anticipation builds for the upcoming “Spring Garment Exhibition–2024.” Talented garment makers from across the country are investing their creativity and dedication into their work in preparation for the event.

Among them is Cutter Jo Un Ju from the Taesong Tailor’s Shop in the capital city of Pyongyang. Not a newcomer to recognition, Jo Un Ju earned the top diploma at the “Autumn Garment Exhibition–2023.” Her innovative approach involves crafting simple yet sophisticated garments, blending various textiles to create a unique style for women. In the previous exhibition, she received accolades for her two-piece dress and women’s overcoat designs.

Jo Un Ju’s journey into the world of garment design began during her university days when she acquired a deep understanding of the craft. Following graduation, she contributed to a garment technical preparation station, focusing on elevating dress-making techniques. Immersed in the study of global attire trends, she diligently documented inspirations from the streets and observations of new colors and fabrics.

By 2022, Jo Un Ju had established herself as a skilled cutter at the renowned Taesong Tailor’s Shop, known for crafting quality women’s clothing. Her guiding principle emphasizes the harmonious combination of proper cloth and color, along with fresh cutting lines and collars.

Distinguishing herself with unique collar designs and various cutting styles tailored to different figures, Jo Un Ju’s creations have gained popularity among women for their elegant styles, tasteful decorations, and the harmonious blend of light and soft colors.

In describing her profession, Jo Un Ju likens cutters to gardeners cultivating flowers. She believes that, like flowers flourishing under the care of devoted gardeners, beautiful clothes emerge when created with sincere effort. Her pride in the profession stems from witnessing people radiate beauty in the garments she meticulously designs.

Thanks to the dedication of such “gardeners,” the dressing culture of Korea continues to evolve, bringing brightness to the streets. Jo Un Ju’s debut success at the “Autumn Garment Exhibition–2023” has heightened expectations for her upcoming appearance at the “Spring Garment Exhibition–2024,” where her innovative designs are eagerly awaited.
