The Rimyongsu Waterfalls are found in Samjiyon County, Ryanggang Province of Korea. Water falls like rolls of silk from the right cliff of the Rimyongsu Valley formed by erosion of basalt spouted from Mt. Paektu one million years ago.
There is a pavilion above the waterfalls. The nine main water courses have numerous cascades between them. They dash on the rock edges, throwing up spray and pearl-like waterdrops and they meet again to form water courses.
The waterfalls which seem to be a miniature of different shapes of falls are in good harmony with the dark rocks between the water courses, crystal-clear lake under the waterfalls and surrounding woods, presenting a unique view.
Azalea blossoms in spring, green woods in summer and yellow leaves in autumn are mirrored on the waterfalls and the lake to show peculiar scenery. On a fine day waterdrops splashing from the waterfalls form a beautiful rainbow under the sunshine.
In winter the waterfalls are frozen, but some water courses are not and water flows between the icicles. Especially, the fog which is formed when the water from underground meets with cold air frosts the surrounding trees, turning the area into woods of frostwork. The Rimyongsu Waterfalls, mysterious underground waterfalls rare to be seen, are of scenic significance and thus preserved as a natural monument.
