Nestled between Jaeryong and Sinwon counties in South Hwanghae Province, Mt Jangsu earns its reputation as the “Kumgang of Hwanghae,” a picturesque haven with a rich tapestry of natural wonders.

This mountain derives its name from the pristine air, crystal-clear water, and abundant medicinal herbs contributing to the longevity of its inhabitants. The changing landscapes throughout the seasons have led to various names, such as Mt Hongak in spring for its vibrant azalea and rhododendron blooms, Mt Chongak in summer for its lush greenery, Mt Phungak in autumn for its crimson foliage, Mt Paegak in winter for its frost-kissed trees and snow-covered peaks, and Mt Chiak for its teeming pheasants.

Revered as the “Kumgang of Hwanghae” since ancient times, Mt Jangsu is considered the “queen” of beauty among the ravines in the western plains, while Mt Kumgang holds the title of the “prince” of beauty in the mountains of the eastern part of the country.

Geologically, Mt Jangsu boasts a distinctive quartzite stratum named the “Jangsusan quartzite stratum,” showcasing remarkable resistance to erosion. Its expansive range features over 100 peaks, including Pojok, Jangsu, and Rokjok, along with captivating sites like Sesim Falls, Yaksu Falls, and Samhyongje Rocks.

Adding to the allure are historical relics such as Hyon Hermitage and Jangsusan Fortress, exemplifying the unique architecture of Korean ancestors. Perched on a cliff at the mountain’s entrance is the small Hyon Hermitage, affiliated with the Myoum Temple, dating back to the late sixth century. Affectionately known as the Taram Temple, it appears to hang in the middle of the rock.

Mt Jangsu is adorned with indigenous species like Celtis cordifoia and Forsythia densiflora, alongside pine, Fraxinus rhynchophylla, Quercus mongolica, maple, and Korean pine. The mountain also hosts natural monuments, including the well-protected Forsythia densiflora.

Lush forests provide a habitat for roe deer, badgers, raccoon dogs, hares, foxes, and wild boars. The mountain’s skies echo with the calls of pheasants, cuckoos, orioles, owls, ring doves, and other wild birds, creating a symphony of nature’s sounds.

Mt Jangsu stands as a beloved destination for local tourists, beckoning with its captivating landscapes and the promise of an enchanting escape into nature’s embrace.
