Pobun Hermitage is a temple in Ryongbong-ri, Mangyongdae District, Pyongyang.

It was built during the Koguryo Dynasty, the first feudal state of Korea that existed between 277 BC and AD 668, and rebuilt during the Joson feudal dynasty that existed from 1392 to 1910. The hermitage consisting of five buildings is located to suit the topographical conditions of Mt. Ryongak. The main hall with a hip-saddle roof on the high foundation is about 10 metres on the front and about 6 metres on the sides. It has a board-floored room and a floor-heated room.

The hermitage has a singular and seasoned architecture and was designed to be very solid. Doctor Kim In Chol, Researcher of the Archaeological Institute of the Academy of Social Sciences, says: “The fact that the Pobun Hermitage was built during the Koguryo Dynasty is proved well not only by the inscription of the monument to the hermitage and other records, but also by the method of cutting the stones of the foundation which is same with that of the stones of walls of the Koguryo Dynasty and roofing tiles of the Koguryo Dynasty found around it.

The great leader of the Korean people Kim Il Sung called at the hermitage and instructed on repairing the temple as it had been for the people to visit it. As a result, the hermitage representing the wisdom and talents of the Korean people is still preserved as a precious national cultural heritage and national treasure of Korea.”

Today the Pobun Hermitage repaired to its original state is visited by many working people every day.
