Ri Yun Sim, teacher at Segori Primary School in Pothonggang District affiliated to Pyongyang Teachers Training College, won the teaching technique category at the national exhibition of achievements in physical education and science of the education sector-2023, which was held in November last year.
Ri Yun Sim has been a dedicated teacher for many years, and her journey to this success began with a decision to explore a fresh approach. It all started in 2022 when she decided to introduce paduk (go) lessons to her students.
Initially, her pupils looked at her with curiosity, but as she started explaining the basics of the board game, she noticed their interest waning after just a few minutes. Doubts crept in, and she questioned herself on how to make the lessons more engaging.
Undeterred, Ri Yun Sim decided to connect with her students on a deeper level. Spending time understanding their feelings, mentality, and daily lives, she crafted a preparatory task that resonated with their mindset and innate competitiveness. Turning the learning process into a game proved to be the key, instantly capturing the attention of her students.
But she didn’t stop there. Ri Yun Sim ingeniously combined a discussion-oriented approach with the game. Students, in the process of solving the preparatory task, had to find solutions and present them to the class. This competitive element made the discussions more interesting and actively engaged the pupils in the lessons.
The success of this teaching technique has inspired Ri Yun Sim to embark on a new project. With her dedication and innovative spirit, there’s no doubt she will continue to create exciting and effective ways to make learning a joyous experience for her students.
