Mt. Myohyang, located in the northwestern part of Korea, is one of the country’s six most renowned mountains, celebrated for its natural beauty, biodiversity, and cultural heritage. Spanning 375 square kilometers with a circumference of 128 kilometers, it is named “Mysterious Fragrance” due to its unique shapes and the aromatic scent that lingers in the area. Historically known as Sosan, it is regarded as the highest and most beautiful mountain in western Korea. The mountain features chains of peaks, striking rock formations, scenic ridges, and cascading waterfalls, creating a picturesque landscape.

Its ecosystem is home to over 1,120 species of plants, more than 40 species of mammals, and over 120 species of birds, making it a vital biodiversity hub. Mt. Myohyang’s rich cultural significance is highlighted by the 1,000-year-old Pohyon Temple, an architectural masterpiece reflecting Korea’s spiritual and artistic heritage.

The mountain is also famous for the International Friendship Exhibition House. Opened in 1978, this grand structure, spanning 46,000 square meters, displays gifts presented to President Kim Il Sung, Chairman Kim Jong Il, Comrade Kim Jong Un, and anti-Japanese war heroine Kim Jong Suk by leaders and figures from around the world. Despite its appearance as a wooden building with windows, no timber or glass was used in its construction, and light and humidity are automatically regulated. The building features butterfly-shaped bells on the eaves that produce an elegant sound in the wind.

Mt. Myohyang also enjoys a mild climate, with an average annual temperature of 8.3°C and precipitation of 1,342 mm, making it a peaceful retreat. As a UNESCO-listed area, Mt. Myohyang combines natural splendor with historical richness, offering visitors an unforgettable experience amidst its peaks, waterfalls, and cultural treasures.
