A ceremony honoring the recipients of the 2024 February 16 Science and Technology Awards, Natural Science Awards, Technological Innovation Awards, National Outstanding Scientist and Engineer Certificates, and Outstanding Inventor Awards took place on February 26 at the People’s Cultural Palace in Pyongyang.
The event was attended by Choe Dong Myong (최동명), Secretary of the Central Committee of the Workers’ Party of Korea, Vice Premier Jon Sung Guk (전승국), Chairman of the State Science and Technology Commission Kim Song Bin (김성빈), and other officials, scientists, and engineers.
During the ceremony, the decisions of the Special February 16 Science and Technology Awards Committee were announced. Five major projects contributing to economic development and the improvement of people’s livelihoods were awarded the February 16 Science and Technology Award, while one project received the Natural Science Award. Additionally, five projects were honored with the Technological Innovation Award.
Over 70 officials, scientists, engineers, and educators from institutions including Kim Il Sung University, Kim Chaek University of Technology, Kim Chaek Iron and Steel Complex, the Ministry of Electric Power Industry’s Power Information Research Institute, the State Academy of Sciences, and the Agricultural Informatization Research Institute of the Academy of Agricultural Science received certificates for the February 16 Science and Technology Awards.
Eight officials, researchers, and doctoral students from Kim Il Sung University were awarded certificates for the Natural Science Award. Additionally, more than 50 officials, scientists, engineers, and educators from Kim Chaek University of Technology, the College of Science, Pyongyang Medical University, and the Taean Heavy Machine Complex received certificates for the Technological Innovation Award.
Several individuals were recognized as National Outstanding Scientists and Engineers, including Kim Il Nam (김일남), a supervising professor at the Scientific Research Department of Kim Chaek University of Technology; Kim Kyong Su (김경수), Director of the Power Information Research Institute of the Ministry of Electric Power Industry; Kim Chang Il (김창일), Head of the Modernization Research Institute of the State Academy of Sciences; Bae Seong Nam (배성남), Director of the Agricultural Informatization Research Institute of the Academy of Agricultural Science; and Son Mun Ho (손문호), Head of the Applied Chemistry Research Institute at the Department of Chemistry, Kim Il Sung University.
Additionally, the Outstanding Inventor Award was presented to Kim Sang Chol (김상철), Head of the Agricultural Chemistry Research Institute of the Academy of Agricultural Science; Won Sung Kwon (원승권), Chief of Orthopedic Surgery at the Korean Red Cross General Hospital; Bae Jun Il (배준일), President of the Sinhung Mountain Heat Technology Research and Production Company under the South Hamgyong Provincial Science and Technology Commission; Ro Yong Chil (로영칠), Head of the Paper Engineering Research Institute of the State Academy of Sciences; and So Myong Hyok (서명혁), an officer in the Social Security Forces.
The ceremony concluded with an expression of commitment from the awarded scientists and engineers to continue their contributions toward national scientific and technological progress, in line with the government’s goals for innovation and development.
