Among the majestic, unique, and mysterious natural landscapes surrounding Mount Paektu, Rimyongsu Falls holds a special place. Although beautiful throughout the year, Rimyongsu Falls is particularly enchanting in winter, evoking a unique and captivating sense of wonder.

The waterfall originates from underground water fed by Mount Paektu’s Heaven Lake, flowing through basalt crevices. As a result, the water volume remains constant year-round, and the temperature does not change, even during the freezing winter months. In winter, Rimyongsu Falls transforms into a blend of ice and flowing water. Streams of water weave through icicles, while mist from the underground water meeting the cold air creates frost flowers that decorate the surrounding trees – a truly breathtaking sight.

From afar, the entire valley resembles the flowing garments of a dancing fairy. Up close, the countless shimmering ice crystals glisten in the sunlight, showcasing the stunning snowy landscape of Rimyongsu Falls. The ice pillars formed by the cascading water on the cliffs are another spectacle. Their shapes change over time, resembling the iconic rock formations of Mount Kumgang. In winter, the sound of the falling water reverberating through the ice structures is louder and more resonant than in summer.

Rimyongsu Falls, a rare and fascinating underground-fed waterfall, is designated as a National Natural Monument and is carefully protected and preserved.
