The Ryongaksan toona is growing at the Pobun Hermitage, a temple built during the Koguryo Dynasty. Koguryo is the first feudal state of Korea which existed between 277 B.C. and A.D. 668.

The Pobun Hermitage is located in Mangyongdae District of Pyongyang City. The tree is said to have been growing since around 1900.

It is 12 metres high, its root neck is 1.84 metres round and its breast height 1.4 metres round, and its crown 8.5 metres wide.

The tree grew trimly up to the height of 6 metres before forking into three branches.

White flowers bloom in July, giving off a unique fragrance. Its fruits are oval and 2 to 2.4 centimetres long.

The Ryongaksan toona is of scientific importance and it is also of significance in adding beauty to the scenic Mt. Ryongak.
