Established on July 22, 1982, the Paektusan Institute of Architecture stands as the DPRK’s key institution for architectural design and research. Situated in Ryonhwa-dong No.1, Central District, Pyongyang, this prestigious institute is dedicated to creating monumental structures, developing cutting-edge construction materials, and enhancing the architectural environment through modern design principles.

The Institute’s expertise encompasses the design of monumental structures, public and residential buildings, and specialized facilities, while maintaining a strong focus on traditional Korean styles blended with global architectural trends. Its designs reflect Juche principles, emphasizing originality, functionality, convenience, and aesthetics. The Institute also priorities the development of green, sustainable, and intelligent buildings that align with global environmental standards.

Organizational Structure

The Institute comprises four specialized divisions and the Paegyon Trading Company, which handles foreign trade, procurement, and marketing:

  1. Designing Division Renowned for its expertise in designing monumental edifices, this division has contributed to iconic structures such as the Monument to Party Founding, Ryugyong Hotel, and Pyongyang International Airport. It also played a key role in residential projects like Mirae Scientists Street and Ryomyong Street. With a team of nationally ranked architects and designers, the division excels in comprehensive design services, from structural and facility planning to landscaping and furniture design. It is also actively involved in research on green, healthy, and smart buildings that meet international architectural trends.
  2. Environmental Hygiene Division This division focuses on the hygienic evaluation of architectural environments and green building materials. Its laboratories conduct research on environmental and material quality, having established numerous national standards for construction materials. Recognized as a national authority in green building certification since 2017, the division ensures that architectural projects meet the highest environmental and health standards.
  3. Building Materials Division Specializing in the development and popularization of innovative finishing materials, this division has introduced high-quality products such as decorative paints, wall relief coatings, and paper plaster plates. Many of these materials have become national standards and earned accolades, including gold medals and top awards. The division is at the forefront of creating diverse, functional, and aesthetically pleasing materials for modern construction.
  4. Air Conditioning Equipment Division With a long-standing reputation for excellence, this division designs and manufactures advanced air conditioning and geothermal systems. Operating as the Korea Air Conditioner Technology Company, it collaborates with domestic and international enterprises to develop state-of-the-art climate control solutions. Its achievements have been recognized at national scientific and architectural festivals.
