Located 15 kilometers west of the Port Hotel, the renowned West Sea Barrage stands as a testament to engineering prowess and national development. Spanning 8 kilometers, this impressive structure was constructed across the sea over five years, from 1981 to 1986.
The barrage features three locks, capable of accommodating ships ranging from 2,000 to 50,000 tons. It also includes a railway, motorway, and sidewalks, enhancing both transportation and accessibility.
The West Sea Barrage has significantly addressed irrigation issues for arable land and improved water supply for industrial and residential areas in the region. Moreover, it has increased the traffic capacity for ships, streamlining transport within the area. Prior to the barrage’s completion, the journey from Nampho to Unryul required a 200-kilometer detour. Now, this distance has been drastically reduced to just 8 kilometers. Additionally, the landscape along the lower reaches of the Taedong River has seen substantial improvement.
The construction of the West Sea Barrage has not only facilitated regional transportation but also contributed to the economic and environmental enhancement of the west sea region.
