May 5th marks International Maternity Hospitals Day.
Each year, the International Confederation of Maternity Hospitals highlights the day to promote maternity hospitals socially and aims to improve medical services for pregnant women and newborns through their active involvement.
This year’s theme for International Maternity Hospitals Day is “The Role of Maternity Hospitals in the Face of Climate Change.”
The unforeseen consequences of climate change, driven by global warming, have significant implications for humanity.
Even before the aftermath of the global COVID-19 pandemic subsides, the repercussions of infectious diseases occurring worldwide pose a severe threat to the lives of pregnant women and newborns.
Currently, tens of thousands of pregnant women and millions of newborns worldwide are dying due to a lack of skilled assistance from maternity hospitals. In response, the United Nations Population Fund and the World Health Organization emphasize the necessity of ensuring a minimum of four to eight antenatal checks and skilled birth assistance for all pregnant women and newborns to protect their health.
Prioritizing maternity hospitals and investing in them in every country is an effective way to protect the lives and health of women and newborns, bringing happiness to every household.
In Korea, where human life is highly valued, healthy new lives are born every year under the protection and benefits of the state and society. Even pregnant women who faced life-threatening situations during childbirth experience the joy of new life.
Pregnant women in Korea receive comprehensive antenatal and postnatal care, with a total of 11 sessions – six antenatal and five postnatal – ensuring safe childbirth regardless of risk factors.
Especially, maternity hospitals, responsible for the management of pregnancy, childbirth, and postpartum care, uphold the honor and pride of being healthcare professionals safeguarding the lives of pregnant women and newborns with a sense of duty in a clean and hygienic environment.
In DPRK, maternity hospitals carry out their duties with unparalleled honor and pride, ensuring the health of pregnant women and newborns.
