Pyongyang, the capital city of the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea, is a city steeped in history and natural beauty. It is situated in the west of the central part of Korea and has been known as a scenic place since ancient times. The city’s history dates back to the early third millennium BC, when King Tangun, the founding father of the Korean nation, established Kojoson, the first ancient Korean state, and chose Pyongyang as its capital.

After President Kim Il Sung liberated Korea in August 1945 and established the DPRK, Pyongyang’s new history began as the capital of a sovereign and independent state. However, during the Korean War (1950-1953), the city was heavily bombed by the US imperialists, reducing it to ashes. The Korean people, however, worked tirelessly to heal the war wounds and rebuild their city.

Today, as the political, economic, and cultural center of the country, Pyongyang has been developed into a modern city. The heart of the city is Kim Il Sung Square, and the streets in the central part and on the outskirts of the city have been laid out with consideration for the citizens’ labor conditions, residence, and rest.
