The Kangdong Greenhouse Complex, a symbol of the great prosperity brought about by the era of self-reliance, is currently producing abundant, high-quality, and nutritious vegetables for the citizens of Pyongyang.
This vast agricultural facility, which spans over 260 hectares, is a shining achievement of the Party’s devoted leadership and a testament to the superiority of Juche agriculture. With over 1,050 structures—including advanced greenhouses, production facilities, public buildings, and residential units—the complex represents the pinnacle of modern agricultural technology, far surpassing similar facilities in other countries.
At the heart of the Kangdong Greenhouse Complex is the introduction of “plant factory” greenhouses, which utilize cutting-edge cylindrical cultivation devices to maximize efficiency in vegetable production. These innovative structures enable a fully industrialized farming system, where environmental conditions such as light, humidity, and nutrient supply are meticulously controlled.
By employing an advanced rotation mechanism, the cylindrical cultivation devices ensure that crops receive optimal light exposure and nutrient absorption. Within the dust- and germ-free greenhouse environment, 42 such devices have been installed, allowing for a harvest just 20 days after seedling transplantation. Thanks to this method, dozens of functional vegetable varieties, rich in vitamins and essential nutrients, are cultivated year-round.
The complex features an intelligent farming system, which employs real-time monitoring of crop growth and environmental conditions. This system, controlled through a virtual production network and advanced automation tools, optimizes production processes and ensures maximum efficiency.
The Kangdong Greenhouse Complex is not merely a production facility but a model for socialist agricultural development. It features seven types of greenhouses, including those for hydroponic cultivation and vinyl-based structures, each optimized for different crops.
Beyond its agricultural capacity, the complex has transformed the surrounding area into a model “greenhouse town,” equipped with modern multi-story residential buildings, nurseries, kindergartens, schools, and a polyclinic. This development ensures that workers and their families benefit from a high standard of living, reflecting the People’s Government’s unwavering commitment to the welfare of its people.
In accordance with the Party’s policy of self-reliance, all technological advancements in the Kangdong Greenhouse Complex have been developed domestically. Scientists and technicians at the State Academy of Sciences have played a leading role in designing and implementing these innovations, reducing production costs while increasing efficiency.
The complex is equipped with domestically developed hydroponic measuring devices, high-pressure mist systems for climate control, automated agrochemical sprayers, and precision irrigation tools. These remarkable achievements highlight the strength of the DPRK’s independent scientific and technological capabilities.
Despite facing challenges such as heavy rainfall and complex underground water conditions, the construction of the Kangdong Greenhouse Complex was completed in just one year. The Korean People’s Army construction units, infused with the revolutionary fighting spirit, carried out this monumental task with unparalleled speed and determination. Their heroic efforts have resulted in a world-class agricultural base that will serve the people for generations to come.
