Pyongyang, the capital of the DPRK, boasts numerous bases for cultural and leisure activities along the meandering Taedong River, including the uniquely architectured People’s Open-air Ice Rink. This iconic landmark has been a top priority for the respected Comrade Kim Jong Un, who has always shown genuine concern for providing his people with happy and cultured living conditions. In fact, he visited the construction project on three occasions to ensure that it was built magnificently, which resulted in its inauguration in November 2012.

The open-air ice rink is a true gem that operates for all seasons and features an oval-shaped skating ground with a spacious area of 1,800 square metres. It also boasts a skate-lending counter, waiting and rest rooms, a clinic, a broadcasting room, and other amenities that cater to skaters of all ages and levels. Even complete novices can learn elementary gliding and other skills in a short time with the assistance of experienced instructors.

It comes as no surprise that the open-air ice rink is always packed with citizens, both young and old, all year round. In winter, it is particularly popular, with people flocking to the rink daily to enjoy this beloved winter activity. According to the instructors, skating is an excellent whole-body exercise that can effectively strengthen the heart, lungs, and other organs. This sport is particularly beneficial for young people, helping to build a sound body.

The People’s Open-air Ice Rink has welcomed millions of visitors over the years and has become a true source of joy and recreation for the people of Pyongyang. With its beautiful architecture, top-notch facilities, and friendly staff, it is no wonder that it is regarded as one of the most remarkable landmarks in the city.
