Just a short drive – about 8 kilometers from the city of Sariwon in North Hwanghae Province, Mt. Jongbang is one of DPRK hidden gems. Known for its breathtaking landscapes and rich history, it’s been praised in ancient texts as “the most beautiful mountain in the Hwanghae region.” And honestly? They weren’t wrong.
What makes Mt. Jongbang so special is how it completely transforms with the seasons. In spring, the mountain bursts into color as apricot and pear trees bloom across the slopes, creating the illusion of floating flower clouds. Locals say if you want to truly understand the beauty of Mt. Jongbang, you have to see it in spring.
Summer brings blooming magnolias and deep green forests, while autumn paints the entire mountain in fiery reds, oranges, and golds. Come winter, everything slows down under a blanket of snow, with pine trees standing tall and serene—it’s like walking through a living postcard.
Mt. Jongbang isn’t just about pretty views. It’s also a place packed with history. The Jongbang Fortress, originally built during the Koryo Dynasty and expanded in 1637, stretches over 12 kilometers and once stood as the strongest stronghold in the area.
Though many structures were damaged over time, parts have been beautifully restored. One standout is Nammunru, the South Gate Pavilion, rebuilt after being destroyed during the Korean War. There’s also Seongbul Temple, another historic treasure that’s been carefully restored, along with a five-story stone pagoda that quietly reminds visitors of the mountain’s long, storied past.
Today, Mt. Jongbang is a public park loved by hikers, history buffs, photographers, and anyone who just wants to escape into nature for a bit. Whether you’re chasing spring blossoms or winter calm, this mountain offers something special year-round.
