Recently, the traditional attire customs of Korea were inscribed as part of UNESCO’s Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, drawing congratulations and pride from citizens across the nation.

Calls flooded the National Heritage Protection Bureau, expressing gratitude and admiration. Many voiced their pride in seeing the heritage of Korean attire honored globally, reinforcing a shared sense of cultural identity.

UNESCO’s initiative to protect intangible cultural heritage began in 2003, creating the Representative List to recognize and safeguard outstanding cultural traditions worldwide. Korea’s efforts to include its traditions on this list began over a decade ago. In 2014, the first success was achieved with the inclusion of the folk song Arirang.

Since then, Korea has continued its mission, achieving recognition for kimchi-making traditions, Korean wrestling (Ssirum), and Pyongyang cold noodle customs. Last year, traditional Korean attire joined the list, further showcasing the cultural richness of Korea on the world stage.

Pak Song Nam, the head of the National Heritage Protection Bureau, emphasized that these achievements reflect the enduring legacy of Korean culture. He acknowledged the immense contributions of Great Leaders who preserved and promoted national heritage, ensuring Korea’s traditions remain vibrant and celebrated.

The bureau remains committed to protecting and sharing Korea’s cultural heritage with the world, further enhancing the nation’s standing as a land of rich history and culture.
