First day of October 2016 marks the 70th anniversary of Kim Il Sung University, the highest institution of Juche-oriented education in the country.
After the liberation of the country on August 15 1945 from the Japanese colonial rule Kim Il Sung grasped the necessity of the training of the national cadres in the nation building. To this end, he ensured that Kim Il Sung University was established as a parent body of universities to be set up across the country and that a preparatory committee was formed to push ahead with the founding of the university.
Thanks to his leadership, the university was estabilished on October 1, 1946.
Afterwards, Kim Il Sung climbed Ryongnam Hill adjoining Moran Hill, scenic place in Pyongyang, to select the site for the university and had rice donated by the peasants to the country used in the construction of a new building.
Kim Jong Suk, the anti-Japanese war heroine, personally made the sample of the uniform and visited the construction site several times, taking the lead in the implementation of the plan of Kim Il Sung.
Under the guidance of Kim Il Sung who visited the university on more than 100 occasions and gave instructions on over 900 occasions in his lifetime, the university, in its long history spanning seven decades covering the periods of the building of a new country, Fatherland Liberation War, postwar rehabilitation and socialist construction, has developed into a base for training a large contingent of national cadres.
The history of Kim Il Sung University is resplendent with imperishable exploits of Kim Jong Il.
Kim Jong Il entered the university in September 1960 with a lofty intention to lead the country by learning the revolutionary ideas of Kim Il Sung. Since then he made tireless efforts to develop the university into that of the President both in name and in reality and raise its status as a world-class university.

In the first half of the 1960s he ensured that the standpoint and ideological system of supporting the Workers’ Party of Korea and the leader were firmly established in the university and the Juche character maintained in education. Afterwards, while leading the Party, the state and the army, he guided the university work at every step so that it could perform with credit its mission and role to bring up the backbone that would support the cause of the Party and the leader.
He led energetically the work of the university so that it could consolidate its material and technical foundations and brought about a radical change in educational work as required by the new century. He also took measures to spruce up the university by building a modern e-library and swimming pool.
