In the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea, a determined push is underway to mark the year as a triumph of victory, characterized by significant strides in energy conservation. This national effort has seen numerous units intensifying their endeavors to economize every watt of electricity, recognizing it as the lifeblood of the economy.
Among these units is the Rangnang Disabled Soldiers’ Essential Plastic Goods Factory, which stands out for its remarkable electricity savings while consistently surpassing its goals under the national economic plan. Chief Engineer Kim Tuk Su elaborates on their strategies: “Our factory primarily utilizes electric heating equipment, such as injection-remoulding and moulding machines, accounting for 80 percent of our usage. We’ve transitioned from an open to a closed production process, successfully halving the heating time and slashing electricity consumption by 15 percent.”
Furthermore, the factory has ingeniously rearranged workteams and machinery, optimizing power usage and boosting production efficiency.
Another notable innovation comes from the Malgunachim Electric and Electronic Goods Manufactory, which has developed a groundbreaking power factor compensating device. This device, when implemented nationwide, could yield energy savings equivalent to building a large power plant. Official Kim Song Il notes, “Our new device utilizes a novel condenser and repurposes idle electrostatic condensers from various factories. This not only lowers installation costs but also ensures safe and efficient operation.”
A shining example of self-sufficiency is the Pyongyang Taedonggang Fish Restaurant, which now generates its own electricity. By installing a solar power system across its roof, the restaurant produces hundreds of kilowatts daily, fueling its business operations with renewable energy.
This collective endeavor is underpinned by the ethos that each watt of saved electricity is a valuable asset in propelling the nation forward. It’s a vivid illustration of the principle that “many a little makes a mickle,” with every unit actively contributing to the vital task of conserving energy.
