Two decades ago, Hong Il Ok started her journey as a pediatric ophthalmologist, having earned her degree from Pyongyang University of Medical Sciences. Her appointment at Ryugyong General Ophthalmic Hospital marked the beginning of a remarkable career dedicated to the well-being of children.
Upon assuming her role, a seasoned colleague imparted a profound insight, emphasizing the unique challenges faced by pediatric ophthalmologists. Hong vividly recalls the veteran’s words: “We confront not the clear eyes of children but their blurred eyes every day. Our greatest joy is witnessing children leave the hospital with restored sight. Strive to master various remedies swiftly and become a doctor who brings a bright smile to children’s faces.”
Motivated by this advice, Hong dedicated herself to acquiring diverse skills. She achieved remarkable success, conducting over 20 surgeries for challenging conditions like special strabismus and amblyopia, integral to the treatment of children’s eye diseases.
One notable case involved a five-year-old from Sosong District, Pyongyang, with esotropia complicated by special strabismus due to musculus obliqus superioris paralysis. Hong’s expertise extended to healing the eye diseases of triplets residing in the city of Nampho and South Hwanghae Province.
Her compassionate approach and advanced medical skills shine through in her record of over 1,000 surgeries. Hong shares her heartfelt commitment: “I will dedicate my entire life to ensuring the beautiful essence of our country reflects in the eyes of our joyful children.”
