There is a lagoon called Samil 0.79 km² wide in Samilpo-ri, Kosong County, Kangwon Province.
The Lagoon Samil is a historic place associated with the revolutionary activities of President Kim Il Sung, the great Leader Kim Jong Il and anti-Japanese heroine Kim Jong Suk.
President Kim Il Sung visited this lagoon on September 28, Juche 36 (1947) two years after the liberation, when he suggested anti-Japanese heroine Kim Jong Suk to show him her marksmanship already famed in the days of the armed struggle in Mt. Paektu. She took a pistol from him politely and fired at the target.
He and other officials heaved a sigh of admiration at her firm hold of the pistol and making a hit in a stroke displaying the marksmanship of an anti-Japanese sharp shooter, heroine of Mt. Paektu. The officials saw in their mind’s eye her devotional efforts for guarding President Kim Il Sung risking her life in numerous bloody battles against Japanese imperialists.
She regarded to resolutely stand up for the revolutionary ideas of President Kim Il Sung and defend the safety of the HQs as her noble duty and mission and was always devotional for this sacred cause. That day she earnestly requested them as follows:
We have still a long way to go for our revolution, which demands continuing to whet our marksmanship. Though our country was liberated, another half swarms with American invaders. If we are to drive them out of the country and build it good to live in, all of our fellow countrymen have to be good shots….
