Choe Suk Myong is a revered figure who has dedicated over fifty years to crafting mass gymnastics. She has been a driving force at the Mass Gymnastics Production Company under the National Cultural Events Bureau.
Born into a humble worker’s family, Choe Suk Myong began her journey in mass gymnastics in 1970. After graduating from university, she initially focused on educating the younger generation. Later, she joined the Mass Gymnastics Production Company and played a key role in creating Scene 2 of Act 3, “We are the happiest in the world,” for the mass gymnastics event “Under the Banner of the Workers’ Party of Korea” at the Fifth Congress of the WPK.
Choe Suk Myong’s creations resonate with the aspirations and demands of the people, blending perfect ideological and artistic qualities. In her twenties, she tirelessly worked on producing masterpieces like “40 Years Traversed by the Republic,” “The Sunshine of Juche,” and “The Shining Korea,” all of which became beloved by the public.
Despite her busy schedule preparing for numerous mass gymnastics performances, Choe Suk Myong was sent abroad by the state to promote Korean-style mass gymnastics. She also uniquely crafted Scene 1 of Act 4, “My hometown with larks singing,” for the mass gymnastics “Following the Party Forever,” staged in 1992.
Over the years, Choe Suk Myong honed her directing skills and creative vision. She significantly contributed to showcasing the prosperity of socialist Korea with her masterpieces, including “The People Sing of Their Leader,” which won the People’s Prize, and the grand mass gymnastics and artistic performances “Ever-Victorious Workers’ Party of Korea” and “Arirang,” both of which received the Kim Il Sung Prize.
In recognition of her invaluable contributions to the development of mass gymnastics, Choe Suk Myong was honored with the Kim Il Sung Prize and the title of People’s Athlete. She has been invited to national celebrations and conferences on multiple occasions.
Now in her 80s, Choe Suk Myong’s motto remains, “The aspiration for something new must be about creation and the pinnacle of civilization.” She continues to pour her wisdom and passion into creative endeavors with the energy and spirit of youth.
