Many stories about laudable deeds are heard in the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea where the people are forming a large harmonious family with moral excellence and affection. People help others carry a heavy load, offer each other a seat in a bus, return what they picked up to its owner and help the old or those unwell to walk to their destinations.
In the flower garden of such noble virtues, people are establishing unusual relations with each other. Typical of them are “sister and brother” An Jong Sim working at the Pyongyang Hosiery Factory and Jang Kum Song living in Phyongchon District, Pyongyang City.
One day 10 years ago, An Jong Sim went to a hospital and happened to see a patient on a wheelchair who had come together with his mother. She helped the old woman accompanying her son for treatment and took them home.
She was deeply impressed to hear the woman say that her son, an honoured disabled soldier, visits the socialist construction sites and inspires the builders handing over aid materials and reciting poems he wrote.
Since then she has become his sister. She has heard so many stories about people taking care of the honoured disabled soldiers like their kinsmen. She always thought how to help him better.
She visited him on his birthday as well as on holidays to please him. She got new collection of poems for him who likes poetry and called on well-known poets with manuscripts of his poems for their advice. Once she got medical herbs to cure his legs and stayed up all night beside him in hospital.
As it is said that what comes from the heart goes to the heart, the honoured disabled soldier finally recovered his legs and came to walk. Now he is working hard for the country.
10 years has passed, but nobody had known the fact. Even her schoolmate and her close friend at the factory knew nothing about it. Everybody came to know after receiving a letter of thanks sent by the honoured disabled soldier to the factory. An Jong Sim says:
“Not only I, but others must have done so as I did. I have done nothing special. I have only done my best to honor harmonious tradition of the whole country helping and leading each other forward.”
