In the heart of Pyongyang’s Hyongjesan District, an extraordinary family has been making waves—not just for their music but for their lifelong dedication to serving their country. The family of Jong Man In, a retired soldier in his seventies, and his wife Kim Yong Ae, has become well-known for their unique family choir, performing across the country to uplift and inspire workers, farmers, and soldiers.
Despite their age, Jong Man In and Kim Yong Ae are far from slowing down. Whether visiting construction sites or cooperative farms, they actively support workers through both hard work and heartfelt performances, believing that true patriotism lies in contributing to the country in any way possible. Their four daughters and granddaughters share the same dedication, always seeking ways to give back to society.

At the Phase 3 Hwasong District 10,000-unit housing construction site, Jong Man In, Kim Yong Ae, their daughters, and sons-in-law are actively engaged in patriotic singing efforts.
Jong Man In’s commitment to his country began decades ago. For over 40 years, he served in the military, deeply aware that “the happiness of the family depends on the strength of the nation.” His wife, Kim Yong Ae, stood by his side, raising their children with the same unwavering sense of duty.
Their daughters grew up admiring their father’s military service. Inspired by his sacrifice, they made a life-changing decision: each of them enlisted in the Korean People’s Army after graduating from school. Even after completing their service, they remained dedicated to national defence, with many of them marrying military officers and continuing to support the country in various ways.
The family’s transformation into a traveling musical troupe began unexpectedly. A few years ago, while delivering supplies to workers at the Hwasong Street construction site, Kim Yong Ae wanted to help with the heavy labor. The workers, instead of accepting her assistance, asked her to sing for them instead.
That moment sparked an idea – why not bring joy and encouragement to workers through music? With unanimous support from the family, they formed a family choir, practising tirelessly despite their lack of formal artistic training. Over time, they mastered instruments and refined their performances, driven by the belief that even a simple song can uplift those toiling for the nation.
Their first official performance was at the Hwasong Street construction site, where they were met with overwhelming applause. Encouraged by the warm reception, they expanded their performances, traveling to various construction sites and rural areas, bringing inspiration to workers.
Last year, they took part in events supporting the “20×10 Regional Development Policy”, which focuses on accelerating local development. In places like Sungchon County, they not only delivered essential supplies but also performed for builders, farmers, and soldiers, boosting morale and fostering a sense of unity.
The performances of Jong Man In, Kim Yong Ae, and their family may not be grand productions, but their sincerity resonates deeply with audiences. Their music and unwavering spirit of service continue to inspire those working to build the future of the nation.

Jong Man In’s family is preparing support materials to be sent to socialist construction sites.
From soldiers to musicians, their journey is a testament to the power of patriotism, perseverance, and family unity. Even today, their voices echo through construction sites and farmlands, proving that every citizen, no matter their age or background, can contribute to the country’s progress in their own way.
