In Pyongyang’s Moranbong District, specifically in Heungbu-dong 22, lives a couple widely known as the best elderly badminton players not only in their neighborhood but across the city. Yun Jong Su and Park Sun Hui have earned a stellar reputation through their numerous first and second-place victories in senior sports competitions.
Participating annually in various senior badminton events—including men’s and women’s singles, men’s and women’s doubles, and mixed doubles—they consistently showcase impressive skills, earning widespread admiration. Over the years, they’ve amassed countless certificates and medals from these competitions, despite not being professional athletes.
Their journey into badminton began after they retired. One year, during an outing with their family to the picturesque Moranbong Park, they observed an elderly couple enjoying a game of badminton. Captivated by the sight, many onlookers, including Yun Jong Su and Park Sun Hui, watched in admiration. Inspired, they decided to take up the sport themselves.
Starting with basic equipment, they found that badminton, which seemed easy at first glance, was quite challenging. Determined, they sought out experienced badminton enthusiasts, learning techniques and honing their skills through persistent practice. More than a decade has passed since then. They fondly recall the joy of placing in the rankings for the first time, a moment that felt even more triumphant than their subsequent victories. Today, they continue to enjoy daily matches with fellow badminton lovers, relishing the camaraderie and the vibrant spirit that the sport brings to their lives.
