Established in 1946, the Korean Documentary and Science Film Studio has been a key player in documenting North Korea’s history. Their story began with the production of “Our Construction” in 1946, followed by the first sound documentary, “People’s Committee,” in 1947. During the 1950-1953 Fatherland Liberation War, the studio played a vital role in producing documentaries to support the war effort.

The studio then focused on showcasing postwar rehabilitation, international solidarity events, and the revolutionary history of leaders Kim Il Sung and Kim Jong Il. As we entered the 21st century, the studio continued its prolific output with documentaries reflecting admiration for the great leaders, highlighting achievements under the Workers’ Party of Korea’s leadership, and capturing the lives of overseas compatriots.

In addition to documentaries, the studio contributed to education through Juche-oriented mass science films, providing accessible yet accurate information on nature, society, and advanced science and technology. Notably, in 1952, the studio produced its first science film exposing germ atrocities committed by the US imperialists during the Korean War.

The documentaries and science films from the Korean Documentary and Science Film Studio continue to be an essential part of North Korea’s cultural landscape. They play a crucial role in fostering a sense of national pride and revolutionary spirit as the country strives for overall development.
