Solar-powered ferryboats, Okryu Nos. 1, 2 and 3, started their service in the Taedong River flowing through Pyongyang, the capital city of the DPRK.

The ships, built at the Ryongnam Dockyard with indigenous technology and efforts, can run for eight hours at one time, according to Yun Hyok, captain of Okryu No. 1. Each boat has a displacement of 45 tons without noise and it can sail at 6kns and accommodate 50 to 60 passengers.

Choe Mi Gyong, an official of the Ministry of Land and Maritime Transport, told KCNA that the ships are to run between Kim Il Sung Square and the Tower of the Juche Idea in rush hours. They are also used for citizens and foreigners’ sightseeing while ensuring ordered service.
